What is IVIG therapy?
IVIG therapy, also known as intravenous immunoglobulin therapy, is a treatment in which immunoglobulin (antibodies) are administered directly into the bloodstream through a vein. Immunoglobulin is a protein that is naturally produced by the immune system to help fight off infections and other foreign substances. IVIG therapy is typically used to treat immune disorders, such as autoimmune disorders and primary immunodeficiency disorders, in which the body's immune system is not functioning properly. The therapy works by providing the body with additional antibodies to help fight off infections and other foreign substances.
IVIG therapy is usually administered over the course of several hours, and it may be repeated on a regular basis, depending on the individual's condition and response to treatment.
Before starting IVIG therapy, patients should tell their healthcare providers about any medical conditions they have or medications they are taking. All patients are monitored closely during treatment.
After IVIG therapy, Wellscript recommends patients have regular follow up appointments with their provider.
